David Ricardo was born on April 19 1772 in London Essays - Economy
David Ricardo was born on April 19 1772 in London and was the third son of 17 children. His parents were very successful and his father was a wealthy merchant banker, making a fortune on the London Stock Exchange. When he was 14, Ricardo joined his father's business and showed a good grasp of economic affairs. However, he was disinherited by his parents when in 1793, he married a Quaker, so he set up on his own career as a stockbroker. He continued as a member of the stock exchange, where his ability won him the support of an eminent banking house. His success in this allowed him to retire at the age of 42. This enabled him to pursue his interests in literature and science, particularly in mathematics, chemistry, and geology. Along with Malthus, Ricardo was very concerned about the impact that rising populations would have on the economy. He argued that with more people, more land would have to be cultivated. However, the return from this land would not be constant as the amo unt of capital available would not grow at the same rate. In fact the land would suffer from diminishing returns. Extra land that was brought into cultivation would become more and more marginal in terms of profitability, and eventually returns would not be enough to attract any further capital. At this point the maximum level of economic rent would have been earned. The knowledge of comparative advantage enables countries to trade with other countries more efficiently and knowing the opportunity cost than are forgone and making the correct choices. It improves diplomatic relations between the trading countries. It also enables us to know which countries are relatively better at producing certain goods as compared to other countries. So,due to this theory,it allows trade between countries to improve their consumption of the goods in the market. This will raise production and provide more jobs.Indirectly, its solves the problem of unemployment due to incre asing population.Because of his theory,it has opened up trade to other countries hence increasing options for decision making. It encourages specialization between countries by showing that specialization actually increases production.

The First Review of Van Goghs Paintings
The First Review of Van Gogh's Paintings The very first art critic to review Van Goghs paintings was Albert Aurier (1865-1892), and it happened during Van Goghs Lifetime. Aurier was a painter himself, as well as an art critic. Aurier was passionate about Symbolism, then an emerging art movement. His review, Les Isolà ©s: Vincent van Gogh, was published in January 1890, on pages 24-29 of the magazine Mercure de France. This was a magazine read at the time by everyone with an interest in modern art.1 In it, Aurier aligned Van Goghs art with the nascent Symbolist movement and highlight[ed] the originality and intensity of his artistic vision.2 In his review Aurier described Van Gogh as the only painter he knew who perceives the coloration of things with such intensity, with such a metallic, gem-like quality, his work as intense and feverish, his brushstrokes as fiery, very powerful, his palette as dazzling, and said his technique matched his artistic temperament: vigorous and intense. (Full review, in French.) Aurier also published a shortened version under the title Vincent van Gogh in Lââ¬â¢Art Moderne on 19 January 1890.4. Vincent van Gogh wrote a letter3 to Aurier in February 1890 to thank him for the review. Thank you very much for your article in the Mercure de France, which greatly surprised me. I like it very much as a work of art in itself, I feel that you create colors with your words; anyway, I rediscover my canvases in your article, but better than they really are - richer, more significant. Van Gogh then goes on to deprecate himself: However, I feel ill at ease when I reflect that what you say should be applied to others rather than to me and right at the end he gives instructions about how Aurier would do well to varnish the study hed sent him. Suppose the cable TV industry is currently unregulated. However, due to complaints from consumers that the price of cable TV is too high, the legislature is considering placing a price ceiling on cable TV below the current equilibrium price. If the government does make this price ceiling law, dia gram and explain the effects with supply and demand analysis. If the cable TV company is worried about disgruntling customers, suppose that the company may introduce a different type of programming that is cheaper for the company to provide yet is equally appealing to customers. Explain what would be the effects of this action. - Price Ceiling is actually a government-imposed limit on the price charged for a product in a particular industry. Governments usually require price ceiling to protect consumers from conditions that could make necessary commodities impossible. However, a price ceiling can cause troubles if imposed for a long period without any controlled rationing. Price ceilings can generate negative results when the correct solution would have been to increase supply. In the example given, the price ceiling has a considerable impact on the market. Cable TV Company finds that it cannot charge what it had been before the imposition of price ceiling. This may result TV Cable Company to drop out of the market. The consequence will be a reduced supply. Meanwhile, customers and/or consumers suddenly find they can now buy the product for less, so quantity demanded increases. These two events results in the quantity demanded which may exceed the quantity supplied. This may cause a shortage unless rationing or other consumption controls are imposed. 3. Consider a perfectly competitive market. Analyze and explain in detail using graphical tools to show what you expect to happen to the number of firms and firm profitability in the short run and long run a) if demand for the product falls and b) if demand for the product rises. - A perfect competitive market is filled with buyers and sellers so nothing can affect the market price. If the demand of the product falls it is tolerable because the firm does not pick the price, the firm just chooses how much to make at the given market price. The firm does not lose anything. If the demand for the product increases the n the firm benefits of course and the price is not changed. There is no need to cut the price to sell more because the firm picks the amount they are willing to sell; if the price is increased buyers will fall off. à 4. Discuss why some long-run average cost curves are steeper on the downward side than others. Discuss fully. - Long run average cost curves show the economies and diseconomies of scale of a specific firm. So when a firm gets
